Lessay Fair (La Foire de Sainte-Croix) is the one of the largest fairs in France. The area occupied by the various stalls and attractions stretches over one hundred acres of land. In the region of two thousand exhibitors and 400,000 visitors attend the fair which is a regular event of many years standing - there are records of it being held in the early part of the twelfth century. There is a strong possibility that the fair may have been held for a thousand years.
The annual September event offers a huge variety of stalls and entertainment. One road alone specialises in the sale of wine from all areas of France. There are foodstuffs from cheese to freshly cooked bread and the local Calvados. Apart from the huge variety of food and drink on sale, there are stalls selling garments, jewellery, household items etc. Roast meat is prepared on spits and barbecues by the "Rotisseurs" who usually number fifty. The roast meat on offer includes lamb from the salt marshes by Mont St. Michel.
There is a horse fair on the Friday and an Agricultural Fair on the Saturday. The atmosphere at the fair is alive with fun and this is a very popular event. Lessay is just north of Coutances.
